Tango Soul – Tango Pasión
How Italian workmen created the tango

Tangos by Carlos Gardel, Aníbal Troilo and Astor Piazzolla
Argentine music by Carlos Guastvino, Alberto Ginastera, Ariel Ramirez and Alberto Williams
Folkloric music by Jose Bragato and Jorge Cafrune

The Chamber Music Company celebrates the vibrant, dark-hued music of Argentina with a mixed programme of folksong, popular classics and, of course, tango.

Argentina has one of the richest musical heritages of any country in the world – an intoxicating mixture of indigenous, black and European. Until then 1880s the gaucho reigned supreme, and his music filled the great spaces of the pampas. But when Buenos Aires became industrialised a huge workforce of Italian migrants entered the country, and the old traditional country songs and dances were transformed. The result: Tango!!

Hear the great music of the wide open spaces – the chacareras, zambas and bailcitos; hear music of the gauchos, and hear tango as you’ve never heard it before – as a part of its true Argentine heritage.

CMC and Latin America
The Chamber Music Company has a close association with the music of Latin America. CMC was bequeathed a treasury of 20th Century Latin American songs and chamber music, creating from that a poetic and musical history of Latin America for BBC Radio 3 – The Twilight of the Iguana. Following work in Bolivia and Peru, and collaborations with tango band La Mariposa Tango and Mauricio Venegas’ Qimantu, CMC produced its first Latin American Roadshow in London – a multi-disciplinary celebration of tango, bossa nova, guitars, performance poetry, puppetry and dance. With the Mariposa Tango, CMC collaborated on a landmark production of Piazzolla’s tango operita, Maria de Buenos Aires, for Dartington International Festival.

Wed 16th Dec
Preparing to go to India next week to continue our singing classes, started in Aug this year. It’s a great project starting to gain momentum – we’re attempting to find and develop Indian singing talent. There are classes in Bombay and Goa – six days in the former, three in the latter – for a selected group of singers, many of whom came in August.

There’s potential to find some great voices and give them opportunities to sing in India – something impossible up to now for singers of western style music. Opera is not so different from Bollywood – it’ll be a great opportunity to start off a new phenomenon in India.

Skin-stretching heat, mosquitos both black and white, enough food to sink a tanker and drink to irrigate the Kalahari, autorickshaws bent on reaching heaven early, pollution you can cut with a knife and noise enough to drive beast to water …. India is unforgettable and essential.

Eight students in Goa, ten in Bombay kept us more than busy. The standard was bracingly low at first, but all made the most outstanding progress with incredible speed. The lack of available teachers means that students accept good teaching and drink it down wholesale. And they remember it. The over-tutored blasé west should take note!

CMC Rare Music Series: Concert 3 – Ignaz Friedman piano Quintet One of the world’s great pianists was also a fluent composer – mainly of songs and miniatures. CMC are delighted to present his Vienna-inspired piano quintet.

Far East Roadshow: Inspired by China on tour: new Chinese-British collaborations featuring Yin Yang collective and Chinese dancers

Tango Soul-Tango Pasión: CMC’s new arrangements of tango classics and their Argentine inspirations – the pampas, gauchos, música folclórica, Carlos Gardel and Aníbal Troilo…. Argentine guitar

Deconstructing The Trout – a fresh look at classic repertoire. We have commissioned two new quintets with the Trout line-up, one already completed by Steve McNeff. We are creating a bold new performance method for this great work, with new variations and composers’ interpolations between the movements - in our new version the Trout will last an entire evening!

The true story of China’s Immortal Beauty, the Tang Dynasty concubine Yang Guifei, is one of China’s great love stories. The creative team of Kenneth Clarke (writer), Richard Daniels (composer) and Mark Troop (co-composer and arranger) has lifted the tale out of China’s 8th Century history, turning it into a vehicle for the 21st Century - Sacrifice.
