Rediscovering the classical heritage.
There’s a wealth of music in the classical canon that is simply never heard. Works disappear for reasons that might have nothing to do with their worth. CMC researches forgotten chamber music and puts it back where it belongs – in the centre of the repertoire.
The CMC Rare Music Series is devoted to this unusual music. We take a work, breathe fresh life into it and put it back on stage in a vibrant context to suit.
Started in 2003, the series is a springboard for interest in great works of the past. The inaugural concert, at the Purcell Room in May 2003, featured ‘the greatest work Liszt never wrote’ (The Independent): Robert Volkmann’s Trio in B flat minor – so beloved of Liszt that the great pianist toured it round Europe with violinist Joachim and cellist Cossman – and turned Volkmann into an overnight celebrity.
The second concert featured the piano quintet of Ludomir Rozycki – a masterpiece of Romantic opulence from before the First World War.
The Rare Music Series set these two works in a wonderful context showing them to best advantage:
