CMC Rare Music Series

GREAT MUSIC FROM THE PAST RESTORED TO ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE!

There is a wealth of music in the classical canon that is never heard. Great works disappear often without reason. We at CMC rediscover them and put them back  where they belong: in the centre of the repertoire. Our Rare Music Series is devoted solely to showcasing this music.

We take a work, breathe fresh life into it and put in a vibrant context to suit. Notable rediscoveries to date include little known works by composers such as Fibich, Granados, Liszt, Mahler, a number of Latin American composers, and even Mozart.

Mark Troop, Director of CMC, has been performing programmes of rare music for many years, and established this concert series as a springboard for interest in these great works of the past. The series made its inaugural debut at the Purcell Room, with a concert devoted to the rare masterwork by Robert Volkmann. In the following year, CMC presented Ludomir Rozycki’s Piano Quintet in C Minor, the first public performance since this work, along with the rest of his body of compositions, had disappeared into obscurity following the First World War.

Rare Music Series in repertoire this season: Volkmann Trio; Rozycki Quintet. In development – Friedmann’s Quintet; Marx’s Quartet; Jadassohn’s trios & quintet.
