Yin Yang Collective

Chinese music and instruments are fascinating and exotic. We are proud to present this amazing culture, its wonderful instruments and most of all its players, in a programme of mixed Chinese and western classics.

The Yin Yang Collective presents The Lure of the East: music from both western and Chinese cultural traditions, featuring ‘Greensleeves’, Vivaldi ‘Four Seasons’, Mozart ‘Turkish March’, Strauss @Radetsky March’, Piazzolla’s passionate tango ‘Oblivion’, ‘Jasmine Flower’ and ‘Moon over the Erquan’, Falla ‘Spanish Folk Songs’, and more.

The Lure of the East is performed with three traditional Chinese instruments (xiao, guzheng, erhu) and two western (piano, cello). The Chinese musicians will introduce their instruments Chinese style in work particularly associated with their instruments, after which we shall play special arrangements of western pieces that suit the Chinese instruments, and vice versa. Through the informative and engaging evening audiences will get to know some Chinese history, a lot of music, and discover the versatility of these wonderful instruments and their players.

There is life beyond the premiere!

So much new music never gets beyond its first performance. In 2006 Mark Troop started Second Glance to address this problem, to the delight of composers and publishers all over the UK.

Second Glance promotes Second Performances pure and simple. Wherever we can we will perform new works that have been neglected for whatever reason, without compromise or affiliation.

Turning premieres into repertoire is the ethos of the festival, and we want as many performers as possible to be in on the fun. To that end we have run the festival twice in London and taken it twice to South Africa, where we exchanged music and ideas with South African composers and players at the New Music Indaba.

Through Second Glance we have a working festival that can showcase new music in the best light possible – and it has rapidly become a wonderful snapshot of the contemporary British musical scene in all its glory and inventiveness.
