Second Glance Festival 2007
London’s repertory festival of new music

Second Glance is a Festival of second performances of new music. It takes place over two separate weeks in June 2007 at Bolivar Hall in Central London. Composers will be in attendance and performances will be given by The Chamber Music Company and the Carducci String Quartet.[list of performers]

Devised by CMC’s artistic director Mark Troop, Second Glance gives commissioned works the second performance they deserve. Many works never get beyond the excitement of the premiere. Second Glance is a showcase for new work that needs to become repertoire. The Festival is being offered to promoters round the country and overseas.

As well as the overriding commitment to second performances Second Glance 07 has a special focus on Chinese new music, on the vocal repertoire almost entirely absent from last year’s festival, and in tribute to our venue, Latin American composers.

Composers represented - Anthony Powers, Ken Hesketh, Joe Duddell, Judith Weir, Michael Zev-Gordon, Martin Butler, Michael Finnissy, Jonathan Lloyd, Michael Stimpson, Libby Larsen, Paul Burnell, Ian Wilson, Jane O’Leary, Frederic Rzewski, Gyorgy Kurtag. From last year: Adrian Williams & Steve McNeff, Chinese music strand: Zhou Long, Fung Lam.

Most works will be London premieres, with some UK premieres and one sneak world premiere (Two Blake songs by Andrew Gant)

With The Chamber Music Company and The Carducci Quartet we welcome special guests Richard Edgar-Wilson (tenor), specialist contemporary music soprano Frances Lynch, budding superstar violinist Ayako Yoshida and percussion supremo Chris Brannick (of Ensemble Bash). We are delighted to include new Chinese music in the Festival as a prelude to our Chinese events in autumn 2007 and spring 2008.

Artistic Director, Mark Troop comments “The first festival was a joyous celebration of creativity. The second changes the names involved, but not the spirit. This music is vibrant and we think it sounds better in this context than perhaps when it was commissioned!”

"Most festivals want something new, but are also are unwilling to programme whole concerts of contemporary music. This one is refreshingly different". DAVID MATTHEWS

"The idea that the 'almost impossible second performance' forms the core of its repertoire is one that should be copied up and down the country. My own experience was wonderful. Highly professional, enthusiastic and charismatic performances of three of my pieces garnered excellent reviews for both the music and the players." TOM INGOLDSBY

"I attended two out of the four concerts of the first Second Glance Festival which included two of my own pieces: both received superb performances, and I was also able to hear eleven other pieces by seven other living composers, all of them extremely interesting." DAVID MATTHEWS

"The audience was warm and enthusiastic, and as this group of concerts, and the Bolivar Hall (a splendid venue for chamber music), become better known, they ought to become an important date in the music calendar." JOHN CASKEN

"Your commitment to performances of existing new music is very special and cuts away from the hype that surrounds first performances to engage with the music as an on-going part of artistic life. The performances were exemplary in their approach and artistry. All a composer could hope for really." STEPHEN MCNEFF
